Ascent Trip Report

My son, Marshall, and I could not locate a public access road, so we asked permission at a farmhouse on the west side of the road southeast of the county high point. The landowner studied my map and finally decided that the actually Sherman County High Point was not on his property. He said it was "Hall's land," but he granted us permission to drive on his pasture roads in order to get close enough to hike. He said, "Hall won't mind." The road was a little rough for my little 1991 Ford Festiva, but we were able to drive to .75 miles directly south of the high point before I felt the need to start walking. It was an extremely unpleasant hike into a strong, cold north wind. We reached Area 2 first and felt that Area 1, along the CO-KS state line was actually higher. We hiked southwest to the fence row separating the two states and walked south until we reached the highest "bump" of land for the Sherman County High Point. We followed the fence row south to get back to my car. With the wind behind us now, it was not nearly as unpleasant, but it was a long round trip distance to cover just to claim an extra few feet from where we left the car. Alas, that is sometimes the nature of this strange obsession!
