Ascent Trip Report

Many thanks to Scott Surgent for his fine trip report ( )
As we drove north from the small ghost town off of the interstate, we found the dirt track to be in good shape and that most intersections had green city street type signs. After going through a gate (open and close), we found a "street" marker for Doubtful Canyon and we turned left and headed west, following the road as it made its way to the "trailhead", a large gate with a "no trespassing" notice on it. There was space for about three vehicles to park on the north side of the road near the gate and a surprise to see a "wilderness" area marker there as well.

Making our way we found ourselves finally reaching a drainage area that led up and away from a large bull that was watching our progress. In the drainage we came across the skull of a bighorn sheep with both horns still attached. We left it where we found it after taking a few photos and continued on, following the directions provided by Scott in his TR. We found the first "obstacle" as the way up and out of the wash (drainage) to a gap that allowed us to work our way towards a large rock face that had an "overhang" which we skirted to the right. Then we went steeply up to another area that was the crux and worked our way up onto a plateau. (See Scott's description). We did find a few cairns along the way but only after we had surmounted the "obstacle", which in this case was a short class 3 section. Finally, we made our ways over to the boulder section and Dennis found the perfect way up (see his GPS track). On top we found a register and benchmarks and great views to the surrounding area. Overall, a good hike and one with just a flavoring of adventure to it.
