Ascent Trip Report

I met up with the RMI group in Mexico City on Saturday night and we enjoyed a nice dinner out. I had done absolutely zero research on Volcán La Malinche as I would be led right up it with the group. It was nice to be rid of the rental car and done with the more stressful part of the trip where I was planning, navigating, and driving everywhere alone. I signed up for this guided trip which would be the first real guided climb I have ever done. It was my present to myself for 9 months at sea in 2013 which precluded me from any significant mountaineering adventure. I was also hoping to build a bit of a guided resume with RMI to begin working towards a Denali ascent in the next few years. If I performed well on this trip, I am sure they keep notes on climbers when they accept climbers for bigger, tougher peaks.

My GPS was just about out of room to save tracks at this point, so this peak would be my last peak with a GPS track and I only had enough room to do an ascent track. No worries, the descent followed the exact same route. The group settled into the cabins there pretty quickly and we were on our way to the peak. I expressed my strong desire to summit this ultra to our guides who said that the peak was more for acclimatization than to bag a peak. They were really cool and indicated that we would do our best to summit. If not, it is certainly very easy to do so. A trail takes you right to the top. I just didn't want to have to come all the way back here for this easy hike.

I found myself at the front of the group pretty easily, likely due to the fact that I had already been at these elevations for a week now. The hike was straightforward and the summit rocks are class 2+ at most. The entire group made the summit without any problems.
