Ascent Trip ReportStandard hike via Observatory Trail. Road is paved to trailhead, and fine for a passenger car (we had a rental Corolla). There are no longer any restrictions on taking rentals on the Saddle Road as far as I can tell (all rental contracts on the Big Island had such a restriction 20 years ago or so). The road is certainly improved since the early 1990s.
This trail is rough, and the altitude is high. While most parties won't take as long as we did, be prepared for a longer day than the map suggests.
