Ascent Trip ReportOn a beautiful winter´s day, I drove east to the small village of Bezau in the Vorarlberg. In winter 2013/14 the cable car (Seilbahn Bezau) started at 9am and cost 16 Euro return to the top station of Baumgarten (see www.seilbahn-bezau.at for details, also in English). I started from there, although the middle station would have also served ok. My purpose was to see the view back down to Lake Constance, which was worth it in the clear morning air.
Strapping on my snowshoes a short ascent, followed by a descending traverse took me to the summer alp hut of Stongerhöhealpe. Continuing to traverse below the peak of Hasenstrich, I took too high a line and had to reverse 100m or so before finding the line of the path about 50m lower (it falls from just below the hutat about 1650m goes around a slight ridge line and into a bowl reaching a low point of about 1500m). The path from the middle cable car station also reaches this point and is seemingly much easier to follow, albeit with a 300m ascent.
Joining the tracks of some people ascending on ski, I climber right (east) to avoid the steep ground in a direct line to the summit, before hitting the summit ridge a short distance east of the summit. Views were tremendous in the clear winter air and I enjoyed it for half an hour with a few others (all on skis), before heading down. Plunge stepping down to the bowl and path junction took only 15 minutes and from there I decided to walk back to Bezau on the forest paths in the valley via Alpe Wildmoosalpe. Below 1000m there was little snow, and by the time I hit the valley it was pleasantly warm in the sunshine. A fine end to a tough year.
