Ascent Trip ReportMany people have climbed Half Dome and The Matterhorn but few people have scaled The Matterdome. Last night I was browsing the US Forest Service topo map on Caltopo.com when I noticed this wonderfully named peak. A quick google search revealed this peak is the 37,764th highest mountain in the United States! (according to peakery.com)How could one resist climbing it? After a restless nights sleep, Jack and I set off for Whitewater at 5:30AM. We spotted a large bighorn ram right when we got out of the truck as the sun was rising. We walked up mining roads to Painted Hill and then the benchmark. From Painted BM made our way to the saddle at the head of Super Creek. Beyond the saddle we followed sheep trails along the ridges and ledges up and around the loose cliff bands that seem to be on all sides of this peak. It was rather difficult terrain do to the loose nature of the geology and the wind was blowing really hard. At one point we had to down climb a difficult dry fall. After that it was an easy ridge walk to the summit. The views in nearly all directions are great. We left a register I had salvaged from Quail Mountain last weekend (there were 3 on that peak!) then returned the same general way, spotting 2 more sheep along the way. It took about 4 hours round trip, not bad considering the terrain and Jack is only 8.
