Ascent Trip Report

After a steep hike from Flint Gap on the AT, I left the trail as it flattened out on the shoulder of Green Ridge Knob (36.0464 N, 82.61434 W). An old jeep road leads west. It peters out, but a faint trail then turns WSW and steepens. No matter, the bushwhack is quite open. The summit is on a narrow ridge - the high spot is easy to determine.

I was headed towards Gravel Knob, so I took a more northerly route down, quickly spotting some yellow blazes on trees. These appear old and the trail doesn't seem well-traveled. I lost it, but eventually continued in the same direction and happened to rejoin the trail at the 3 tombstones...memorials to Union sympathizers that were killed by Confederates during the Civil War (36.05135 N, 82.61796 W).

My GPS measured this 50' higher than Gravel Knob which I measured on the same day. I've found that my calibrated GPS is accurate within 5' on any given day...and given other reports on the matter I think it's pretty clear that Green Ridge Knob "steals" the prominence from both Gravel Knob and Camp Creek Bald.
