Ascent of Gravel Knob on 2013-12-07

Climber: Shannon Dillmore

Date:Saturday, December 7, 2013
Ascent Type:Successful Summit Attained
Peak:Gravel Knob
    Location:USA-North Carolina/Tennessee
    Elevation:4852 ft / 1478 m

Ascent Trip Report

Parked at Devil's Fork Gap. Was a nice pleasant walk along the AT, although views aren't really to be had anywhere on this route. Didn't matter, it was foggy. I did Green Ridge Knob and Flint Mountain along this route, but if this is your sole objective you're looking at about 12.4 miles round trip. I found the bushwhack to be a rather gentle slope and not too ugly by walking past the peak on the AT and heading up from 36.06044 N, 82.62855 W (probably also helped that the foliage was gone). No escaping the thicket of briars on the summit. I couldn't find the benchmark - reports suggest it's buried 18 inches under the ground - but I did find two directional markers pointing at it.
