Ascent Trip Report

The entertaining and informative outdoor writer Ronald Turnbull is of the opinion that the ideal number of hills to ascend in an outing is 3 (see his book 'Three Peaks, Ten Tors' for an explanation of this). With this in mind I applied myself to climbing not only 2 of the 10 Greater Manchester Unitary Authority high points but also a visit to the trig point on the hill formerly thought to be the summit of Greater Manchester (but now merely a historical footnote). There is a move by some (well, the Mountaineering Club of Bury) to label these 10 as "The Wilsons" but I don't think this has yet captured popular imagination. It was only Oldham and Tameside for me today.

Parked at Dove Stones Reservoir Pay & Display car park and followed the road up to Chew Reservoir before launching myself across untracked moorland to each of the 3 tops. Initially misty but with improving visibilty later, at least the fence post marker on Black Chew Head and the trig point on Featherbed Moss are easy to see from a distance in the otherwise pretty much featureless undulating moor of peat hags and groughs, grassy tussocks, heather, and other leg squelching, ankle twisting terrain. Like many a moor best to tackle this area during a drought or in frozen weather - today there was just enough frost to add some solidity to the peat. The 'summit' of Hoarstone Edge and all of Tameside is marked by a micro-cairn and a laminated black and white photo of Mr Anthony Wilson (whoever he may be).

A generally clockwise trip and a pleasant return past Wimberry Rocks back to the Water Board road and car park.
