Ascent Trip Report

After an early morning ascent of the Dürrnbachhorn, I drove the toll road (EUR 7 in Oct 2013) to Winklmoosalm, the entrance to which lies a few km southeast of Reit im Winkl, on the road to Ruhpolding. This road is extremely steep in its lower parts, not to be recommended when icy..
From one of the parking lots at the alm, you can follow the signs to the “Nostalgiebahn”, which is an ancient chairlift, with single (one person) wooden chairs, riding very slowly and low to the ground. It must really be one of the oldest in the Alps and cost EUR12 return. Twenty minutes later I disembarked, although to hike would probably only have taken an hour..
From the top station it is trivial to follow the path (a bit rocky) to the summit ridge. The highest point is a few hundred meters further east than the cross, which will be obvious if it is not misty. The highest ground lies under some dwarf pine, a meter or two from the path itself, which continues along the nice ridge (steep on its north side), then heads back down to the Alm parking. The distant views were getting slightly hazy, and the sky was white with high cloud. Otherwise views similar to those from the Sonntagshorn (see trip report).
