Ascent Trip Report

I drove half way to the summit of Ward Mtn. I drove to the old Ward Historic Mining Site on the east side of the mountain and 0.2 miles past the historic district sign, I turned right on an unsigned road. This is a 4WD road. I followed the road 1.7 miles to a small saddle at about 8,878 ft elevation. On an earlier trip to the area an ATV'er told me the road was much worse above this saddle. After hiking the peak, I think I could have driven to the summit if it hadn't been for the snow. I hiked the road up to the Defiance Mine site where the road splits and I went right. I stayed left at the next fork and eventually reached the summit in a whiteout with about 5" of snow on the ground. I imagined that the views would have been great if the weather would have been better.
