Ascent Trip ReportEn route to Denver truck camped near Scott Creek trailhead on Thursday night, got up at 4 AM and was hiking by 4:30. I was up high in Scott Creek basin by 5 AM and decided to walk the Continental divide over to the peak instead of following contour through the basin.
On the great divide at 5:30 AM by yourself is a magical place to be. I aborted staying on the divide all the way to Silverheels because I knew it would put me on the north face, not near the NW ridge which was my intended route. I was pleasantly warm until I got to the summit (right at sunrise to!). Then the wind really picked up and it was freezing, I barely had the gumption (or desire to remove my hands from my gloves )to sign the summit register. After taking in the view from above the clouds and calling my wife, I turned and headed back down the NW ridge route, feeling like shit due to the cold and exertion I had to stop and sit down once but continued on until I was in the meadow below hearbreak hill where it was warmer and more suited to taking a break and eating some food. Back at the truck by 10:30, in Denver at 1PM. a great climb.
