Ascent Trip Report

Day 2 of my epic weekend in the Sierras.

Others in party: Nate, John. Other permit group included: Peter & Ignacia, Jim, Mary, and Shawn.

Started at Whitney Portal TH at 3 am with Nate and John. Up Mount Whitney Trail - Nate got sick within the first 45 minutes and decided to turn around. Bad GI issues ended his day before it even began (sad about this!). John and I continued up - to the top of Trail Crest by 7:21 - it was WINDY and cold, so we threw on our warmer gear. It had hailed the previous day on the trail, so we saw bits of hail gathered in the shadows on the 97 Switchbacks. Nothing that was treacherous - but it was there. After passing Trail Crest, we noted that the trail and rocks on the trail were a bit slippery - either from condensation OR from ice that was just melting from the previous night. Nothing super worriesome - we were just careful where we stepped on the more exposed sections. The final push to the top was a bit challenging, and I could definitely feel the altitude and the previous day's climb on Langley. Crested the top just after 9 am - 6 hours up. Spent about 30 minutes on the summit and then headed back down the same route. Back at the POrtal at 2:12 pm. 11:12 total time, 22 miles, 6k gain. Overall great day!

Probably should have eaten and drank more water on the way - had a bad headache on the way down and felt a little nauseated.... when I checked my pack bladder, I realized that I had only consumed 1 liter of fluid for the entire day. Stupid error on my part - I drank enough on Langley and only had a mild head ache at the end.... but Whitney was more difficult on my body. Overall great hike - sad to not summit with Nate, but it was a great day otherwise.

Passed the rest of our group while we were descending... maybe around 10:30 - they still had an hour or so left to the summit. I believe they started at 4:20 am.

Very happy that the weather held out - amazing hike to a wonderful peak!
