Ascent Trip Report

Karin and I left our hotel in Zakopane ("Skalny") before 6 AM and drove for half an hour to Lysa Polana where we had to park the car and walk up the rather dull asphalt road (the only other mean of transportation, horse wagons, was not avaliable so early in the morning). The road ended by the Morskie Oko hut - by the beautiful lake with the same name - where we were among the day's first breakfast guests. The track passed a second lake and then became rather steep. Closer to the top, iron chains had been fixed to the mountain in order to offer some protection; the chains were quite icy so we were glad we had brought our gloves. Some fog around the summit made it impossible to spot Gerlach, but the view of the Polish side (with the two mountain lakes) was quite sufficient.

We had expected heavy rain, but did not even encounter any showers. Eventually, when we were back at Morskie Oko, the sun also broke through. By that time the previously desolated lakes had turned into a virtual tourist attraction - we literally met hundreds of people on the lower parts of our descent.
