Ascent Trip Report

Day nine of Eric's 2013 Colorado trip. Chicoma Mountain was another easy peak Eric wanted to do, and had planned for Monday preceeding our drive back to Las Vegas, NV through New Mexico. But rain falling on the West Spanish Peak forced yet another change to the trip, and we decided to head for Chicoma a day early and then try and find something in western NM or perhaps AZ to try for on Monday instead, which had the benefit of making for a shorter drive home.

The topo showed a trail, but it was hard to find and intermittent. Some flags of pink surveyor's tape appeared and marked a route, hanging from tree branches. The summit was a bare knoll surrounded by wooded slopes, which were effectively higher than the ground we were on, making the view a real yawner. A brief walk to the southwest of the summit area revealed a fairly scenic perspective, though it isn't recorded on my GPS track as I left it at the summit with my backpack.

The descent was along roughly the same route, the highlight of which were large mushrooms (toadstools) with bright red caps and white spots. They were like something out of a Mario video game - Google "Amanita muscaria" and click "images" if you want to see what I mean. I passed on eating any.

After lunch, we decided as a group that we were ready to head back to Nevada, so we skipped Mount Taylor, which I alone was somewhat interested in, as Eric and Tim had done it already and Anji was ready to get home ASAP.

Overall, in spite of numerous forced scheduling changes and trouble with the rain, the 2013 Colorado trip was a fantastic success! Props to each of my three companions for a great nine days! Final stats for the trip were 22352 vertical feet gained and 56.6 miles hiked/climbed.
