Ascent Trip Report

Left Seattle around 1:30 pm after a meeting to climb high rock. Terrible traffic most of the way out even so early so it was refreshing to get out into the country. The two forests roads to the trail head are overgrown and have massive potholes, but are passable by a car with any reasonable amount of ground clearance.

The elevation of the trail head didn't meet my requirement of hiking half of the mountains prominence, so I ran down FR 8440 about a mile to the next switchback to pick up extra elevation. I jogged most of the way to the trailhead and then started hiking.

Well maintained trail with good tread that meanders up through the trees at a moderate slope. At the top, there is a short class two scramble to the lookout. The true summit is directly in front of the lookout and is cliffy on both sides.

The views were entirely socked in, and fog filled the valley in front of me, so I couldn't see how far down the drop off was. Judging by the logbook entires, this is a popular peak in the late summer, with several parties ascending each day. Saw a group leaving when I arrived and another on the trail as I was descending, even without views and fairly late in the day.

Jogged back down the trail to the car. The drive in is almost longer than the hike.
