Ascent Trip Report

My drive:

0.0 MT Hwy 141 at virtual MP 2.5, take 3-Mile Road
0.6 Pavement ends
3.5 Continue straight at fork
5.7 Keep left, signed for Ophir Cr and Marysville (FR 136)
7.4 Sign indicates entering Helena NF
8.5 Junction - keep right
8.7 Keep right toward Marysville (left leads to Cave Gulch)
11.1 Signed junction to left. Route 136-DA, "Black Mtn 4" - drive or walk, depending on your vehicle (Steve Sheriff reports that this point is equally easily reached from Marysville)
11.8 Road is bermed, park here

My walk:

I continued up the road/ATV track/trail WNW toward Black Mountain. See the attached GPS track. The trail is easy to follow. At about 8100' there is clear signage indicating that the CDT goes right. There is an old ATV track left. I went up right, and came back on the left fork. The latter is more direct to the summit, if you can follow it. It's obvious for a while, then there is another fork about 8200' where the summit route goes uphill on a less obvious track. There is a double orange blaze on a tree at this junction. If you find the right (fairly obscure) track it will lead a few yards south of the summit cairn and register. A very weathered sign appeared to indicate that the CDT used to go this way.
