Ascent Trip Report

Got an early start out of the Denny Creek Trailhead at 7:15am with Manny and Sarah of the Tacoma Mountaineers. The ford of Denny Creek is uneventful with only a minimal amount of water coming down this time of year. We made good time to the lake and after a brief stop continued up the valley towards Melakwa Pass. There are still a few small patches of snow between lower and upper Melakwa Lake.

After stopping to refill our water supply at Upper Melakwa we headed up towards the east face. Rather than heading too far up the valley and doubling back, our route took a more direct approach up the scree towards the gully. We ascended the north side up the gully and reached the ridgeline at 12pm. Headed to the base of the summit block and started the final scramble where again our route was a little different. We scrambled up along the climber's right of the main route which was a little more steep and exposed but an excellent climb with solid holds. We topped out at 12:30pm.

Our turn around time was 1:00pm so we spent the remaining time on the summit before heading down. We descended the summit block by the main central route then followed the south ridgeline back to Melakwa Lake. We all found this to be a tolerable route to descend but were glad we choose to ascend via the east face. This south ridge would be a miserable route to ascend. A brief trip to the top of Point 5700 was also in order today.

After reaching Melakwa Lake we once again refilled the water supply then made our way down reaching the trailhead at 5:00pm.
