Ascent Trip Report

Finally back on top of Georgia! This time I took my girlfriend with me and we got there from Blairsville, taking US 19S/129S seven and a half miles before turning left onto State Route 180. After 7.3 miles, we took the left up the Route 180 Spur, which took us to the parking lot. After the grueling two and a half mile elevation grind, I was rewarded with a $5 per person fee, despite the fact that we were hiking instead of taking the shuttle up the summit. At the edge of the parking lot, we sat and ate our lunch as we witnessed a wonderful view.
Walking toward the trailhead, we could see the observation tower hovering over us, as the grand spectacle was visible from miles away. The hike was moderately steep for such a short .6 of a mile, but nothing too strenuous. The entire "trail" was paved except for when it intersected with the old Wagon Trail, and highlighted by rocks on the edge of the pavement the entire length of the ascent. Once out of the forest, we were greeted by a historical marker stating the history and meaning behind Brasstown Bald. "Enotah," as it was called by the Cherokee who lived nearby, had soon become our own playground.
We walked up the tower and took in the breathtaking views from atop the 360 degree panoramic setting while cashing in on being in the highest spot in the Peach State. The clouds slowly passed away and we were able to see not only Georgia's other mountains, but neighboring mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. However, the sky was not clear enough to give us a view of the Atlanta skyline, but in all honesty, I strongly believe that would take some powerful binoculars to be seen from the Bald anyway. After a few pictures, a lot of relaxing, and catching the best and most beautiful scenery the state has to offer, we walked back down with a feeling of success, thankfulness, and fulfillment.
