Ascent Trip ReportI approached Smoky Dome from the town of Fairfield on Hwy 20. I went north on the main road by the gas station for 1.8 miles and turned left on a good straight road signed as 200N. I followed 200N for 10.3 miles where I turned right on 100W and zeroed my odometer. At mile 1.0 I turned left onto Chimney Creek Rd and at 1.5 miles reached a gate where I signed in on the log. At mile 5.1 miles I went straight through another gate and marked as FR 484. At 8.9 miles I passed some corrals on my left and at 9.6 miles I turned right onto a lesser road where high clearance may be a good idea. At 11.2 miles I took the right fork followed by a hairpin turn at 11.4 miles and then went left followed by taking the left fork at 11.6 miles. At 12.0 miles I reached a little ridge with a campsite at 7,760 ft elevation. I parked here and could see Smoky Dome looming just northeast of me up grass and wild flower covered slopes.
There is a little drainage that needs to be crossed. The best way is to follow the ATV trail up to about 8,100 ft and then pick up a game trail heading into the drainage and cross the creek at about 8,200 ft right below a green brushy area. From there follow game trails up and towards the rocky dome marked as 9,884T on the topo. Cross below and to the right of point 9,884T and then follow the ridge to the summit behind the rocky dome. Nice hike, great views. New memorial marker on the summit for a local farmer who was apparently well loved.
