Ascent Trip ReportI approached Elk Mtn from Grangeville, followed Hwy 14 to near Elk City, then turned on FR 222 which I followed to the Red River Ranger Station. This is a long drive and it is still a longer drive to get to the peak. Just past the ranger station I turned left onto the Magruder Corridor FR 468 that goes all the way to Darby, MT. Follow the Magruder Corridor for about 18 miles to FR 285 where I turned left. The sign says it is another 18 miles to Elk Mtn which was my destination. After about 4.5 miles on FR 285, I took a short diversion and turned left on the spur road that goes up to the Green Mtn Fire Lookout. Great views from the fire lookout. Returning to FR 285 I continued all the way to the end of the road where there is a trailhead, a couple campsites, and a privy. Elevation is about 6,900ft.
I hiked the trail up towards Elk Mtn. The trail doesn't actually go to the summit, so I left the trail when I got close and hiked up cross country to the high point that appeared to be on top of a rocky outcropping. Easy walk up onto the rocks. Nice trail that had recently seen some maintenance and some nice views from the summit.
