Ascent Trip Report

Connor Brook Rd (FR 95) has a tree down at the beginning, adding a mile each way (a high-clearance vehicle might be able to get around it but not my civic). The lower 2 miles of the Shelburne Tr is all wide logging roads (past the gate), but there are lots of interesting wildflowers and butterflies to see. I did not see the bridge that's mentioned in my (admittedly out-of-date) AMC guide, but the turn-off is clearly marked with a cairn and a XC ski that's been cut in half and lashed together to make a sign. Both the Shelburne and Kenduskeag trails are very overgrown in places, but not overly difficult to follow and otherwise well maintained (treefalls mostly cleared, ladder securely in place). Some mud, but at least no stream fords on this one. Views from the two eastern knobs of Shelburne Moriah rival those at the summit. Great hike overall.
