Ascent Trip Report

There are a variety of possible starting points for the ascent of Rosennock. I chose to use the Erlacher Haus, a nice rustic hut with good, simple food and a sunny terrace to recommend it. The hut is accessed from the village of Radenthein by following signs for the smaller village of Kaning. Winding up through the village on the main road you I eventually came to a fork, where thr right turn was clearly signed for the Langalmtal and the Erlacher Haus. The left turn leads into the next valley west, where there is also a possible trialhead for Rosennock. Soon afterwards I left the village, and soon after that the road turned to good quality dirt / gravel. After 5 or 6km, I parked 100m before the Erlacher Haus before a tight left turn at an altitude of 1636m.

The path to Rosennnock is well signposted, beginning with a flat gravel road section which I tackled at a slow jog. The road started to rise as I followed the yellow signs for path 170, and I soon reached the Feldhütte at 1758m. Note there was nothing to stop on driving part of this road, but parking opportunities are limited, and the distance is not great.

From the hütte, the path rises steeply to a flatter area, then steeply again up to the ridgeline. Turning right, and following the ridgeline led me to the top in about 50 minutes from the hütte, moving as fast as I am currently able to.. The views were fine, if a little hazy. I could see all of the previous fortnight´s hills, except the Montasch. I jogged back down via the little lake of the Nassbodensee, thinking again how un-Alpine and reminiscent of my native Scotland the Nockberge are.

This was the sixth and final P600m hill climbed during a family holiday to Carninthia. The area would also reward a winter visitor.
