Ascent Trip ReportPart of a Washington DC, Fallingwater and East Coast highpointing tour with my son.
$20 to enter the State Park (at a weekend with non-NJ licence plate), at least we got a large yellow "carry in - carry out" trash bag for our money!
I know it's more interesting and rewarding to approach via the AT and other local trails (and thereby also avoid the entrance fee) but we were short of time, so after a leisurely drive through the woods and past Lake Marcia we got to the tower not long before it closed - I would have been upset if we'd missed the opening hours: check these on the website before you visit: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/highpoint.html.
Some interesting plaques on the outside of the tower and display boards in the entrance lobby. Steep and very hot and humid climb up the internal stairs to the top. The views over the Park and adjacent rolling wooded hills rather limited by the slit-like glazed windows but give a good impression of the environs nevertheless.
