Ascent Trip Report

Decided to do Blanca and Ellingwood Point as a day trip from the "advanced base" (7,920') trailhead parking. I started at 5:15AM, reached Lake Como at 7:22, filtered half a gallon of water at Crater Lake at 8:25, and tagged the summit of Blanca at 9:17AM - 4 hours and 2 minutes for 6,400' of ascent and some 7.5ish miles of fast hiking. Hooked up with a guy named Chris on the summit of Blanca, and he would adeptly accompany me all the way to Lake Como on my way back. Made it to Ellingwood Point just over an hour later, and followed a bad line of cairns down into a string of gullies filled with loose talus. My tip would be to stay as far East in your descent as possible. Down climbing the scree wasn't all that bad, it just took additional route finding (for a gully with a safe runout) and added unnecessary risk of injury. Made it down in one piece, and was back at Lake Como by 12:30. I had a rental car to return (in Albuquerque, NM) in 7 hours, so I hustled down the jeep road and finished the hike by 2:37, for a total time of 9:22!
