Ascent Trip Report

A great trek taken with Tusker Trails, which I highly recommend for their experience on the mountain (since 1977), and for the training their Guides and Chefs receive. Considered the elite of the trekking companies on Mt. Kili, they are more expensive than others, but your health comes first with them, then summiting. Their Guides receive annual re-certification in High Altitude First Response training, and their Chefs are trained by chefs of the Culinary Institute of America. Tusker claims about 99% success rate in summiting.

For the 3 paying clients, we had 21 support crew, consisting of 2 Guides, 1 Chef and 18 porters.

As I had never hiked at high altitude before, I chose the Lemosho Route to maximize our acclimatization time, 7 days up and 2 days down. We were on the trail an average of about 6 hrs per day. We had no rain or adverse weather conditions, except for some light rain on the 9th day. We slept at Crater Camp after summiting, where it dropped to about -20 C overnight; thankfully, there was no wind. There was no snowfall, no flurries, just what is left of the glacier fields at the top.
