Ascent Trip Report

Woke up early to drive out to Grants to get in some hikes before they shut down the Mount Taylor Ranger district due to fire dangers. In hindsight, I would have left the night before and camped out at Coal Mine campground located a few miles from the Gooseberry trail.

Took FR 193 out to the trail head, which was a little bit rough, but doable in my old lowered BMW. There is a large parking area for 5 or so cars by the TH. In order to meet my hiking elevation gain requirement for the peak (half the prominence), I started a bit further south on the unimproved part of FR 193. Passed 10 people on the way to the summit, which offers spectacular views of central New Mexico (Sandias, Manzanoes, Magdalenas, the Jemez, and the Sierra Ladrones are all easily visible on a moderately clear day). Rayleigh and I met a group of Keck interns on the summit and he enjoyed visiting them and begging for food (especially carrots!).

Signed the register and jogged back down to the parking lot. This is a pretty easy peak to climb, especially given its impressive prominence.
