Ascent Trip ReportThis peak was formerly private but a couple of years ago it became a county park. Access is no problem and the peak requires only a short roadwalk. Time constraints and a poor forecast made it suitable for me on this day even though it is better saved for the offseason.
From Highway 29 turn North on Main Street. Go 1/3 of a mile or so and go right on Konocti Road. Follow this until it ends at the TH in roughly 4 miles. It turns to dirt but is still Ferrari compatible. A gate is passed through along the way and this may (or may not) be locked when the park is closed at sunset or before sunrise. Ignore a parking area on the right and continue to the parking area on the left with restroom and such. Lake County apparently spent millions to buy land on this peak and I guess if you are going to do that you might as well throw in some restrooms, signs, benches and garbage cans too. Anyway, walk the road past the gate and then quickly come to a well signed detour around 528 yards of private land where you fork left onto a trail that skirts the edge of the private walnut orchard. Drop and then steeply rejoin the road. From here you just walk the road to the Wright Peak summit. Numerous signs will keep you from getting lost, as if that were possible. Whoever did the signs was very precise as not only does it mention that you pass through 528 yards of private property but the summit is 2.99 miles from the TH. Not 3. Anyway, just hike for a mile and a half to the first switchback and another restroom. Wowzers. Then switchback again for 3/4ths of a mile to another restroom. Then the final push to the summit. A fence surrounds the LO and the comm towers but outside rocks on the far side appear to be higher. I tagged a bunch of rocks and even two little rocky outcrop thingies. Started raining at this point. Oh well. At least it was not too hot. Descent was uneventful aside from the guy walking the road in bare feet while holding his shoes. Straight line hikers might be tempted to cut the first switchback but this would involve either private property in the orchard or heinous brush so don't bother with either. Some nice forest and views of the lake and such. Good winter peak.
