Ascent Trip Report

We got an early start at 6am from the Lincoln Woods Trailhead. Crossing the awesome suspension bridge, we quickly hiked in on the Lincoln Woods Trail to the intersection with the Franconia Brook Trail, and kept right on going. It only took about an hour to reach the Lincoln Brook Trail junction, since these paths are all on old railroad beds. The Lincoln Brook Trail is a little bit more of a hike, and involves numerous brook crossings. Shane was able to do all of them with some creative rockhopping, but for two of them I just strapped on my sandles and waded through the knee-deep water. After the final brook crossing, we did not maintain a proper vigilance and missed the junction for the Owls Head Trail, since it is not marked, and there is only a small cairn at the base of a tree somewhat off of the trail. After having carried on for a little while longer, we decided to just bushwack our way up. The forest is quite close on the hillside, and I was picking pine needles out of awkward spots for the rest of the trip. Once up on the ridge, we quickly found the trail, and subsequently the summit. There was not much of a view. On the way back down we learned what we had missed on the way in. The official trail up follows quite a large slide, that is covered in lots of small rocks and sand. This made for an interesting descent, and I can only imagaine it is somewhat hairy ascending as well. Once we rejoined with the Lincoln Brook Trail, it was an easy jaunt back out to the car. All told, it was an 8.5 hour trip, which included our bushwacking adventure. If one were inclined, trailrunning in the first 5 miles in to the first crossing of Lincoln Brook is perfectly feasable, and would make this an even faster trip.
