Ascent Trip Report

Trip would have been easier but I had an 8 year old and a 7 year along with. We took lots of breaks although these were made shorter due to the legions of gnats that were following us. Really enjoyed the view when the trail comes out into the open 1/4 mile before the summit. We enjoyed about 30 minutes on the summit at the picnic table before heading down. Unfortunately, we must have been distracted and missed our turn on the way down. We lost at least 300-400 feet of elevation before seeing a puddle filled with minnows that we knew we did not pass on the way up. It was a little dis-heartening having to re-ascend since my daughters were pretty tired but we made it. Hard to believe we missed the giant arrow pointing into the woods but I guess we must have been in a pretty deep conversation at the time and maybe lulled into complacency by the well-marked trail. Really enjoyable hike though. We visited the smallest church in the lower 48 states afterwards, which is right down the road outside Silver Lake, WV.
