Ascent Trip Report

Thursday May 30, 2013: Travel day
Left Bay Area after work. Stopped at In N Out in Redding and ate too much. Arrived at the Clear Creek Trailhead 6,400 at 11:00 PM. Packed up and headed to Clear Creek Spring with headlamps. Arrived at near Clear Creek Spring around 12:30 AM. Setup our tent and went to sleep by 2:00 AM.

Friday May 31, 2013: Acclimation Day
I don't remember what time we woke up, but I do recall that I didn't get enough sleep. We had some coffee and breakfast. Enjoyed the view. Now that we could see we decided to move the tent to a better location, somewhere around 8,500'. There was no people in sight. We hiked up to around 10,000' and over to Mud Creek Canyon. Which was incredible. John hiked up to get a view of the falls that we could hear at the top of the canyon.

Saturday June 1, 2013: Summit Day
We left base camp by 5:00 AM, the weather was great and leaving that late didn't hurt our climb at all. We saw the sunrise from around 10,000'. We stopped every 1,000' or so to hydrate and eat. At every rest the view just got better. We were feeling the altitude, but the extra time on the mountain had really helped us. Most of the climb was on snow and ice, but there was quite a bit of scree to deal with. Crampons the whole way and alternating between trekking poles and ice ax. The weather was probably about as good as it gets on Shasta. Cool and sunny with a slight breeze. We reached the Summit around 1:00.
Our descent took about five hours, we glissaded for a few thousand feet, but were both out of water when we got back to base camp.

Sunday June 2, 2014: Departure
We took our time getting up. Packed up camp and hiked out with anticipation of getting a burger an beer in town. I think we arrived in town around 1? Ate lunch and stopped in at the Fifth Season before the journey home.
