Ascent Trip Report

The main diffiulty was the traffic around Como on a holiday..

The Rifugio Venini is a historic hunting lodge / mountain hut offering simple food and accomodation in a stunning location, high above Lake Como. It is possible to drive there from the lower Rifugio di Buffalora via a narrow, part tarmac, part concrete road, but there is very limited parking at the hut itself, and you are expected to use the facilities if you park there. Otherwise there is limited parking at Alpi di Lenno, and much more near Boffalora. Boffaloro itself can be reached from the south via Blessagno and Pigra, a narrow tarmac road, which was in a good state of repair, albeit in places with a ridge in the middle high enough to damage a normal car unless you drive along with one wheel on it. Or from the west from Ponna on a much poorer road, part dirt, extremely steep in places, and which was covered in debris at the time of my hair-raising descent.

The walk itself was trivial, simply along the track and up to the top, but passed some substantial and interesting first world war fortifications (part of the Italian defences known as the Cadorna Line after the General who had it built). On top there was an interesting cairn with sculpture on top and an ice axe bolted to the side.

After returning to the hut I also ascended in the opposite direction to Monte Calbiga, which has a number of sculptures on top, an enormous cross made of steel pipes, and a minature Roman Amphitheatre. Calbiga is almost a twin summit for Tremezzo, being only 1m shorter on the map.

Returning to the hut a second time I enjoyed a beer on the terrace and watched the parascenders before heading back to Lugano.
