Ascent Trip ReportThis was the final peak of our week in Cape Verde. After Friday's ascent of Tope de Coroa we caught the afternoon ferry back to Mindelo and found a hotel.
Saturday morning after a 7.30 am breakfast we are flagged down by a taxi who takes us up to about 380m. From here it's a 2 hour round trip road hike.
The route: The road from Mindelo towards Baia das Gatas is quite pretty and this could be a nice day hike from town, although could be hot, given the low elevation. At the pass we keep R then the cobbled road zigzags up towards the mountain. It's possible to drive almost to the summit but we have the taxi stop at N16.86869 W24.94007 (380m approx) where there is plenty of parking. From here we hike the road, which makes an improbable neatly engineered crossing of the precipitous north face (lovely views of the serrated coastline) then climbs the NE slope in a series of lazy zigzags. The hillside is covered in terraces with several buildings, though they appear mostly abandoned.
We reach the large communications complex situated just below the summit. It's possible to shortcut L direct to the summit, although probably the normal route is to follow the road to the compound gate then keep R, following a path round the outside of the wall, past a distinctive boulder and across a small dip to the summit (N16.86862 W24.93460) which is marked with a cylindrical triangulation pillar dated 1995. We are on the brink of a 300m cliff which the strong gusty wind is threatening to blow us over. The view encompasses the whole island including several nice looking hills; to the southeast is Santa Lucia with perhaps the distant hazy outline of Sao Nicolau behind it.
Directly below us is our taxi, and after a few minutes we walk the road back down and are driven back into town. We check out of our hotel, enjoy a leisurely meal then take our evening flight back to the UK via Lisbon. We hope to summit Serra da Gardunha and Serra da Estrela during a day's layover between planes, although the weather forecast is rather wild, even for a drive-up...
