Ascent Trip ReportToday's climb is NH-4000 footer #48. Rose dropped me off at the TH on Sawyer River road and drove in to North Conway for a day of shopping. I left after signing the register at 8:15 hrs, under clear skies.
The trail was easy to follow and not difficult, stopped for a snack below SIGNAL RIDGE, finally summiting at 10:45 hrs. It was very sunny, windy and cool, put on my jacket, super visibility and an outstanding panorama of all the peaks, fitting for #48. There is a viewing platform on the summit. A red cross helicopter made a few passes in the valley below..... never saw one before so I don't know if this was just a routine run or it was out on an emergency call.
The 360 degree panorama from the summit is simply spectacular, I was able to identify most of my trip and the peaks that I summited, except for the Presidential and Carter ranges. Could not ask for a nicer day. I am one that does not get excited on these types of occasions, however I must say that viewing my accomplishments from this vantage point was very gratifying......could not hold back a smile and a great feeling of happiness.
Uneventful descent back over Signal Ridge to the TH - Rose was waiting for me. Overall the trail was easy with some medium/steep/rocky sections. Highly recommended for views. We overnighted at the Crawford Notch Hostel.I loved my day.
This completes the 4000 footers in NH. Did them in 23 days, thanks to Rose's loving support. #1 was Moosilauke on 1993-08-04.
Rose and I left on 1993-07-26 for a 35 day long back packing trip in NH's White Mountains, the goal being all of NH's 4000 footers and the AT in NH.
I started , north bound on the AT in Vermont, at the LT/AT main juction (Sherburne Pass, VT Rte #4). Rose stayed with me for the first 5 days, drove home on July 31 and came back on day 14 of my trip (Aug 8),this time staying for 8 days. She left on Aug 15, and came back for the 3rd and last time on Aug 24,for the last 6 days of the trip. While with me Rose provided all of the necessary support. We drove home on Aug 29th.
Also this latest backpacking trip completes the AT from the MA/VT border (North Adams,MA, rte 2) to Gorham, NH, a total of 294.4 miles.
