Ascent Trip ReportI approached Old Dad using the DPS Guide. The road is a little sandy is spots and the final section ends in the wash a couple hundred yards short of where it used to end. Mother Nature has been busy rearranging her rocks.
The hike up the wash is easy and the gully for the ascent is easily spotted. I climbed directly up the east rib. The first part of the hike had no cairns and after I got to a saddle up about 300 ft, I saw that others used the wash to go around this first big rocky cliff and ascended the first ramp to the right out of the wash. Hiking up the rib was challenging for route finding. Thankfully there were lots of cairns placed at strategic places that guided me upwards. Without the cairns, I would have spent all day route finding or just climbed directly up Class 3 stuff. The cairns made it a safer Class 2 hike. The cairns kind of ended about 300 ft below the summit. It wasn’t a problem finding the summit, but finding the correct route down took a little exploration.
Fun hike with great views.
