Ascent Trip Report

I followed the DPS directions to get to the 2WD trailhead on the south side of the peak. The 4WD road only went about 200 yards and then disappeared. I thought I could see the route from the parking area, but I went up the wrong drainage. I soon found my way over a little ridge and then into the correct drainage. Hiking up the drainage is a bit tedious with LOTS of rock hopping. Nothing technical, just rock hopping up the dry drainage. Near the top of the drainage, I thought the route to the right of the summit looked good, so I tried going up that way. It was mostly ok until I found myself on the backside of the peak making Class 3 moves on a steep slope. I came down the way the DPS Guide recommends and it was much easier. Views were great from the top. The climb was kind of an ugly rock hopping route and there was nothing special about the mountain or the scenery. It wouldn’t make my Top 100 Wilderness Areas.
