Ascent Trip ReportI used the DPS Guide to access the south side of Chemehuevi. I continued about 100 ft past the steel power tower and then turned left on an old road used to access the tower. I parked back about 200 ft from the road. I could see that someone had driven towards the peak up the washes from this spot.
I hiked about 2.5 miles across the desert through easy terrain. At the canyon mouth, I double checked my location to make sure I was in the correct canyon, and then continued up the canyon. The boulders and brush are avoidable, but it is a little tedious and not just a straight shot up the canyon. At about 2,600 ft the canyon splits and I took the right side. This was a good choice. There are some dry waterfalls and a few cairns that guided me around them to the upper part of the canyon. Then I found an old boot path on the left side of the gully that took me up to a little pass where the gully laid down and it wasn’t as steep. I stayed in the gully as it turned to the right and seemed to lead to the back side of the summit.
Once out of the gully on the back side of the summit, I could see another gully leading up to the summit and I headed up this steep slope. It is just steep, not technical. Once up to the ridge, there is a boot path that goes the last few hundred feet to the summit. Great views.
