Ascent Trip Report

Winter walking is often a case of quality rather than quantity given such short daylight hours; and with so many days of incessant rain recently, when the forecast is 90% cloud-free summits then if work & family commitments allow one must go walking!

My demeanour was initially tested by the fact that the drive to the start and the first hour of walking was all in thick fog but eventually I rose above the cloud at about 400 metres for fantastic views below a clear blue sky to the surrounding hills poking out above the cloud inversion - the Lakes to the NW & the Yorkshire 3 Peaks to the NE were particularly impressive. Apart from the gamekeepers track at the start the going was very heavy though. Fighting one's way across thick heather & across person-eating bogs not quite frozen enough to support my weight!
