Ascent Trip Report

Cold day. ~35-40F in parking lot. Arrived at trail head at 11:30am. Ascended the mountain via the Pike Brook Trail passing Lapland Lake and Black Mountain Pond. Meet a hiker/photographer at Black Mountain pond who was testing out the ice on the pond. Warned of ice on the descent trail on the east side. Summited ~2:30-3p. View of south Lake George Narrows and Northwest Bay. View North (shadow side) was snowy and beautiful, looking towards Ticonderoga we could see Sabbath Day Point and beyond on the opposite shore. Sky was clear and beautiful. The fire tower was closed and converted into an emergency broadcast antennae station. There was also the constant humming of a small single wind turbine. A moderate wind kept knocking snow off trees and into the air giving the perception of snowfall. The temperature on the summit was frigid, probably ~10F. Ate a quick lunch thanks to Stewart's and descended via the other summit trail (east side). Had considerably more ice on this trail. Lots of icicles and some treacherous sections. Arrived back at the trail head after dark.
