Ascent Trip Report

I climbed Easton Ridge last month which plans of continuing on to mount baldy but turned back due to time restrictions. This is the second time I have escaped solid overcast and constant rain on the west side of the mountains to find patches of sunshine in Easton. From the Kachess Ridge Trailhead I took Easton Ridge Trail 1212 to the Domerie Divide junction, starting off in a light sprinkle that gave way to the first of many sun breaks just past the junction. Silver Creek is roaring! I thought the small dam looked close to bursting last month, it's fair to say I underestimated it.

Snow patches appeared around 4500', halfway up the SW ridge of Mt Baldy, and covered 95% of the trail on top of the ridge. Any tracks left by others this snowfall have disappeared between melting and debris fall, but at this point staying with the trail is more trouble than it is worth as the route along the ridge would be difficult to lose.

The top 40' of the summit has melted off, and the vegetation is quickly recovering. Lake Cle Elum was basked in sunlight most of the day and there were several boats and seadoos taking advantage while it lasted. The lower half of the Stewart Range was visible between waves of dark clouds rolling in from the SW. Took the short traverse over to Domerie Peak where I enjoyed lunch and Maverick enjoyed some dog sledding.

Rain clouds were quickly approaching on the descent and I felt bad for the group I passed on their way up, sure they would spend the rest of their trip in a downpour. But as I have come to realize is the norm here, the clouds had parted yet again before I even reached my car.

Someone kindly marked the only confusing part of this trail (less than a half mile from the start, where the trail briefly joins a dirt road at a switchback, then continues to the left and uphill)with orange flags
