Ascent Trip Report

We hiked in Friday night from the unofficial trail at the end of FR 4312 and promptly lost the main trail among the maze of bootpaths along the way. We ran out of light before we could find Thorp lake, so we set up camp in the meadow just below it.

After breakfast at the lake we loaded up our gear and climbed to the lookout tower atop Thorp Mountain. The sky was mostly clear except for some clouds sitting on the surface of the cascadde crest beyond Alta and Lemah mountains. Shortly after arriving at the summit we were circled by a red biplane that seemed to be on a scenic flight.

The origional plan was to visit all three French Cabin Peaks and loop back to the car, but between the heat and cloudless skies and the uncertainty of finding a water source along the way, we we concerned that the 4 liters we could carry wouldn't be enough. We instead took a northern loop past Little Joe Lake, hoping to summit Red Mountain on the other side before heading home.

The Green Trails map (Kachess Lake # 208) accuratley describes the Red Mountain trail #1330 as "Hard to Follow". Keep a close eye on the trail and be prepared to find it when it disappears, as it does often. For safety sake this should not be attempted without a contour map and some route finding experience.

From Little Joe Lake the trail back to 123 and 4312 is smooth sailing compared to the route from Thorp Lake.

We saw many small patches of snow and a few large chutes with deep spots, but the only ones along the trail can be avoided without too much effort. There are, however, several muddy sections near creek crossings, I recommend boots over trail runners.
