Ascent of Carter Dome on 2012-11-25| Date: | Sunday, November 25, 2012 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Carter Dome | | Location: | USA-New Hampshire | | Elevation: | 4832 ft / 1472 m |
Ascent Trip ReportA light flurry of snow just fell, coating all the water ice with a thin layer of snow that added a great deal of traction, enabling us to bareboot with ease. The trail up to Carter Notch, directly along the 19 Mile Brook, was very light and pleasant. The hut could not be located in a better spot: the lake and the overhanging Wildcat made a perfect picture. The hike up Carter Dome was initially steep, but eased out on the shoulder, with a very nice overlook of the notch. The summit was sadly viewless, but the subpeak, Mount Hight, had a spectacular 360 degree view including Mount Washington and all its ravines. Too bad the wind must have been blowing 50mph at least and we had to make a rapid retreat down to Zeta Pass and back down 19 Mile Brook Trail.
