Ascent Trip Report

I have the week off from work, so I planned to drive up from Lubbock to Mount Sunflower (about a 7 hour trip), camp overnight in the nearby Cimarron National Grassland, and then return home the next day.

What was interesting about the trip there was talking to Kansans along the way. When I told them where I was heading, I got two different reactions: people who wanted to know why I was making a special trip just to go there, and people who had never heard of the place.

I'm from West Texas, which is flat, but we've got nothing on Kansas. It's like the surface of the moon out there, it just goes on and on.

Once you get close enough to the high point, the way there is well-marked with signs, making it easy to find the way. I parked and signed the register. Although I was the only one there, others had visited earlier in the day. The sculpture and monument make this high point something special, and although the view is pretty much 360 degree horizon, it's also beautiful in its own way. This would be a really wonderful place to come and stargaze.

Took photos, enjoyed a snack at the covered picnic table, called my boss (a Kansas native), and after about 30 minutes got back into the car and pushed through back to Lubbock.
