Ascent Trip Report

So, my dog Blue was upset with me for getting back to the cabin so late after my 43 mile epic mountain bike ascent of Big Pine, West Big Pine, and Madulce on Saturday. I figured I would take him for a hike and wear his ass out on Sunday, when I planned to do Caliente Mtn. The ridge road is in great shape for mountain bikers all the way to the man-made watering hole at 4500' as indicated in the HPS guide. Blue took a swim in the water to cool off. He is used to evaporative cooling in the desert. I ditched my bike there since the HPS guide said the road steepened after that point. At first the road was fine and I was pissed that I ditched the bike. The road quickly got much more sandy, never good with a bike. It also got steeper. The 2 mile walk to the summit was nice and breezy, much nicer than the earlier heat. I thumbed through the register and took some pics on the summit while I ate and Blue drank. As far as wearing out the dog, it worked. He barely moved in the car all the way back to the cabin and then again all the way home. Who knew a pit bull could hike 17 miles? Now he knows what I do when I leave him behind. Next time he may not be as excited to go hiking, especially if I'm the one on the mountain bike and he's on foot... Also, carrying an extra 2 liters of water for the dog was kind of a pain.
