Ascent Trip Report

I first tried a western approach to the peak using Bent D Road from Hallelujah Junction. Turned out the road goes to Bent D Ranch with "No Trespassing" signs and plenty of fencing. No access this way.

So I drove south to Exit 83 in Border Town and followed BLM roads north out of town on the east side of the Petersen Mtns. It worked, but it took awhile and the roads I were on were barely that at times.

Turns out the best access to the high point of the Petersen Mtns is a trailhead with a sign labeled "Petersen Mountains Natural Area" Easiest way to get there is one of two "Limited Access Roads" off of Red Rock Road to the NE. Either dirt road (4WD strongly recommended due to some steep grades) can be taken SW about 3 miles to a broad saddle near Summit Spring. On the topo map, the trailhead is located at a junction with a jeep road that leads up near the high point of the range. This junction is just south of elevation marker 1852 meters on the topo map.

The hike begins by following the old jeep trail to an obvious spring only 5-10 minutes away. The jeep trail is more like an animal trail at times, and was obscured by tall grass in a flat area at about elev 2060 meters. But it becomes much more evident by the time I got to Horse Spring, located next to a animal water trough. The trail soon after this enters a wonderful little hidden valley on top of the range. The high point can be seen at the other end of the valley about 1.3 miles away. An easy hike to the final summit rocks.

There is abundant deer in this range and plenty of evidence of coyotes. I even spotted what looked like mountain lion tracks. Thankfully, no herds of wild horses with ill-tempered mustangs.
