Ascent Trip Report

This was my 5th time running up Pikes Peak and the 2nd time in the Pikes Peak Ascent 13.32mi. race. I wasn't in as good shape as I usually am for this time of year so I had a little more running difficulty than normal. I started what I thought felt conservatively but of course I started getting tired after only a mile. The Incline section was difficult as usual. This is the series of switchbacks from miles 1 to 5. These switchbacks are just south of the Manitou Incline (good thing we don't have to run up that!).

By the time I hit the flatter mid section (miles 5-8) I knew I was in for a less than stellar performance but I did my best to keep a decent pace anyway.

Last time I ran the mountain I had no difficulty with the elevation because I had climbed Mt. Whitney a week earlier. This year I had no altitude training so I wasn't as strong at the higher elevations although I wasn't struggling either. The biggest difference is in the last mile which last year seemed to fly by and this year the Golden Stairs seemed to take forever, although my time for the last mile was only a minute longer than my better times.

I ended up running 3:32 which is one of my slower times. My best was last year when I ran up in 3:12 as the first half of the marathon. The weather was nice this year as has been the case every time I've here. I spent a little time at the top taking in the experience, and socializing with Barry (who also ran) and Erika (who drove to watch). Barry finished about 10 minutes in front of me. After the intiial few minutes of recovery I didn't feel very drained, which is a good thing since I have the Pikes Peak marathon tomorrow...
