Ascent of Red Peak on 2012-09-30
|Date:||Sunday, September 30, 2012|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||9307 ft / 2836 m|
Ascent Trip ReportHiked the Red-Silver-McConnell-Tells Peak Traverse. All four of the peaks are on the Tahoe-OGUL list. Used the Red Peak trail on the approach to climb Red Peak. Another climber named Jerry showed up at the trailhead soon after I got there. Jerry's also climbing the peaks on the Tahoe-OGUL list. We hiked most of the way to Red Peak together, as this was Jerry's main goal for the day. The traverse from Red Peak to Silver peak, and then to McConnell peak involved sections of bushwhacking and tedious boulder-hopping. The register for McConnell Peak was on the high point 0.2 miles SE from the McConnell Peak named on the topo map.
The most enjoyable section of the traverse was from McConnell to Tells Peak, which crossed rock ledges below the low point of the ridgeline on the east side. From Tells Peak, I dropped down to Forni Lake where I picked up the Highland Trail. This trail disappears where it drops into a flat section at 7600 ft. It's important to find the trail where it drops steeply west of the flat area to avoid near-impenetrable brush. The trail is obvious once out of the trees in this flat area. Hike was 14 miles round trip and a total of 8.5 hours.
It was a hot day and I was pretty hammered after this hike.
