Ascent Trip ReportI approached Chetco Peak from Brookings taking the North Bank Chetco River Road and then FR 1909 to the trailhead. It is about 25 miles from Brookings. I followed the signs to Vulcan Peak Trailhead. The trailhead is off of FR 1909 on the right and there is an outhouse and picnic table at this popular trailhead.
Most people hike the Vulcan Peak trail. The trail starting is combined as 1120 to Vulcan Peak and 1210 to the Chetco Divide. In about .2 mile the trails divide and I took the right one to the Chetco Divide. This trail is good with some ups and downs. I followed it into the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, past Red Mountain, and past Chetco Lake. Once past the little Chetco Lake, I went about another .5 mile and then left the trail to my right and climbed up to the northwest ridge of Chetco Peak. I followed this ridge right up to the summit. This ridge looks steep with several rock outcroppings. The rock outcroppings are easily avoided or climbed over and there is nothing beyond Class 2. However, near the top the ridge gets kind of skinny and there is some exposure to falling. Great views from the summit.
