Ascent Trip ReportI approached Collier Butte from Brookings. I used North Bank chetco River Road, FR 1376, past Sanow Camp Mtn Fire Lookout, and onto FR 3680. It is about 40 miles from Brookings. You can get there from Gold Beach also and it is about 25 miles from Gold Beach. I parked along Fr 3680 where the old road to Collier Butte is blocked. This spot is north of Jacoby Butte and west of Collier Butte and is at about 3,580 ft elevation.
I hiked up the old road to the Jacoby/Collier saddle and then followed the road up the southwest side of Collier Butte. This part of the road is brushy and very overgrown. In spots it is hard to follow. It makes a few switchbacks and then ends on the south slope of Collier Butte. There are a couple cairns at the end of the road and up on the slope. I climbed up to the cairns and then followed the ridge up to the summit. It was never more than Class 2 on the steep slope. Once at the high point, I could see a cairn on the north end of the ridge. I walked out there even though it was obviously lower in elevation. Nice views of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness from the summit.
