Ascent Trip Report

After a morning ascent of the Geissstein I drove north to see if any of the easy peaks in the ´Kaiserwinkl' area would be climbable. There was a strong Föhn wind blowing from the south but this area should be a bit sheltered, especially if I could find a north facing route. Upon reaching Kössen I found warm, calm conditions and the cable car up the Unterberghorn running. This is a small cabin continuous cable car, and the cost of a round trip was 16 Euro in September 2012. The top station is at about 1450m altitude and lies near the Bärenhütte restaurant. There are already nice views and it is immediately clear that the peak has high prominence (>1000m) despite its modest altitude. The ridgeline can be followed up soft grass to the higher and much more basic Unterberghorn Hut, serving beer and snacks out of an old wooden chalet building.

Above this hut you finally leave the ski paraphernalia behind on a short section of ridge leading to the summit which is equipped with a cross, benches and other tourist bits and pieces. If you can ignore the damage and focus on the view it´s not a bad peak. The standout view is to the west where the Wilder and Zahmer Kaiser ranges are close up and impressively steep and rocky. The large Chiemsee on the edge of the Bavarian plain is also visible to the north, to the right of the Geigelstein, as well as a host of other prominent peaks. After a well earned beer on the sunny terrace of the top hut, the descent took only 20 minutes plus another 10 for the cable car.
